Grass Cutting 101 – 7 Important Grass Cutting Tips

Grass cutting seems very basic, and for the most part it is, however by following a few simple grass cutting tips you can have a healthy, luxurious lawn. Healthy grass is green, lush and thick. It is these qualities of healthy grass that allow it to choke out weeds and to resist drier conditions. One of the most important components of lawn care for keeping your grass healthy and beautiful is proper grass cutting.

The following are some grass cutting tips to help you maintain a healthy lawn:

  1. Don’t let grass get too long between each grass cutting.

It is recommended to try to not remove more than 1/3rd of the blade of grass when mowing. If the grass gets too long between mowing’s then more than a 1/3rd of the grass blades may be cut off by the lawn mower in order achieve an eye-pleasing grass length. Ensure grass cutting is done frequently enough to avoid this problem. (See point 5 below. Cutting more than 1/3rd of the grass length increases the plants stress.)

  2. Don’t cut the grass too short during grass cutting.

If grass is cut too short it becomes more susceptible to weeds. If grass is cut too short during grass cutting it becomes weak and sparse. This exposes more dirt, which gives weeds a greater chance of taking root.

  3. Try to perform grass cuttings outside of the hottest, and sunniest, hours of the day if possible.

All grass cutting causes micro-damage to the grass, which is a stressor for the grass.   When cut during the hottest and sunniest parts of the day this can lead to greater loss of water from the grass blades and will not allow the grass to recoup as quickly and return to it’s normal healthy state.

  4. Sharpen the mower blade regularly for better grass cutting.

Just like a sharp knife cuts meat better than a dull knife, or like a sharp axe cuts wood better than a dull axe, a sharp mower blade cuts grass blades cleanlier. A dull blade rips and tears at the grass blades, which causes damage. This can lead to discoloration of the grass.

  5. Try to avoid grass cutting when grass is wet.

Wet grass can clump together and not be picked up by a bagging mower. This can lead to clumps of grass left on the lawn that can kill the grass underneath. Wet grass also has a tendency to bend over in irregular ways creating uneven grass cutting. You will often notice higher and lower areas once the grass dries and stands up properly.

  6. Consider changing up the pattern in which you mow your lawn.

Grass cutting done the same way every time can lead to soil that is compacted. This packing of the soil is due to the tendency, over time, of the mower tires to take the same path with each pass back and forth over the lawn. Changing the pattern you use to mow tends to lead to looser soil, which is more conducive to healthier grass. Weeds love compacted soil. Grass does not like compacted soil. Also, during each mowing, try to not have your wheels go in the same path each pass back and forth. This is avoided by overlapping in a way that causes the tires to take a different path.

  7. Avoid bagging the grass every grass cutting.

You may wish to alternate between bagging and not bagging when cutting your lawn. The grass that remains on the lawn when you do not use your lawn mowers bagger provides fertilizer for your lawn. Also, you save time not bagging and you do not have to use more yard waste bags. Consider not bagging your grass sometimes.

2. Experience

Does the lawn mowing service company have much experience in mowing lawns and using lawn mowers and trimmers? Although using a lawn mower is not rocket science good lawn mowing does require some experience to be aware of high or low part in the ground that can cause the mower to cut too low and kill the grass in that area. It is important to know how to properly overlap the mower path to ensure an eye-pleasing cut. Trimmer technique is vital in not leaving scars in the lawn while providing a profiled trim. Equipment maintenance can affect the quality of grass cutting.

3. Adaptability

No one wants their lawn being mowed while they have guests over enjoying time in their yard. Is your lawn mowing service willing to arrange a new time to come back and mow so as to not disturb your fun time with friends and family? Is your lawn mowing service willing to, on short notice, come and mow your lawn early when you are going to have guests over? Good lawn mowing companies adapt to their clients needs. Lawn fertilizing services may request that mowing be delayed a few days after application. Good lawn mowing services adapt.

4. Attentiveness

Every homeowner has distinct and particular ways they like their lawn to be mowed. A good lawn mowing service will listen and apply the directions given by their client. They will usually make notes and ensure that those directions are regularly followed on subsequent lawn mowing visits.

5. Cleanliness

A good lawn mowing service will make sure that their client’s property is left looking clean of debris. Lawn mowers and trimmers are notoriously bad for spraying grass, dirt and other debris onto sidewalks, patios, door jams, decks, etc. If your lawn mowing service is not sweeping and clearing your walkways and other visible surfaces then they are only doing half the job.
